Impressive win for Leona Maguire in Lucan

There was good news for Leona Maguire last weekend as she played some super golf en route to winning the Hermitage Scratch Cup at Hermitage Golf Club in Lucan, Dublin.
The Ballyconnell girl turned in two excellent rounds on Sunday to emerge a comfortable winner – a positive sign as to her prospects this season, according to father Declan.
“Leona won it in 2009 and 2010 and was second in it last year,” said Declan.
“Usually when she wins it she has a pretty good year, although they are studying a good bit at the minute and won’t be playing any more until their exams are over.”
Leona’s sister Lisa, fit again after an injury, finished a creditable sixth in the prestigious event, which is a warm-up tournament ahead of bigger tests later in the season and featured a strong field.
“Lisa was sixth, she is just getting back to herself. She didn’t play much at the end of last year, she had a wrist injury and had to take a break,” explained Declan.
The sisters had played in the Inter-provincials at Easter, winning all their matches, and after exam commitments are out of the way, will tee off at the British Amateur Open in the summer.
