Childminder accused of harming baby has case adjourned


A 32-year-old Cavan childminder charged with causing serious harm to a 10-month-old was remanded on continuing bail at today's sitting of Cavan District Court.
Sandra Higgins from The Beeches, Cavan Town, was charged with the alleged offence under Section 4 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, on March 28, 2012 .
Ms Higgins was not required to attend today's hearing before Judge Sean MacBride. Gardai were granted extended time to prepare the Book of Evidence and Ms Higgins was remanded on continuing bail to appear again at the court in July.
At the previous sitting, Judge MacBride directed that the name of the infant not be revealed to protect the child's identity.
He had also remanded the accused on her own bail of €500. Conditions of bail are that Ms Higgins resides at The Beeches, signs on every Monday at Cavan Garda station and has no contact, directly or indirectly, with witnesses in the case.
She was told to surrender her passport, if any, and not to apply for any travel documents, or leave the jurisdiction until all matters are concluded.
In the event of a change of address, the accused must notify the State in writing at least 48 hours in advance.
