Body of male discovered in Smithboro identified as Gerard Tierney

Gardai have announced that the body of a male found yesterday (Wednesday, September 5) in Smithboro, Monaghan has been identified as Gerard Tierney.

Mr Tierney (40) had been missing from his home in Smitboro since 8pm on Thursday last week, August 29.

It was reported that he was last seen in close proximity to Northern Ireland, wearing dark coloured trousers and a dark coloured polo shirt.

Gardai had been conducting searches of the area for traces of the missing Mr Tierney, while police north of the border had also been informed.

His death is not being treated as suspicious and investigators are examining if it may have been accidental.

The remains have been removed to Cavan General Hospital for a post-mortem.
