A scene from last year's walk.

Flicker of hope walk in virginia this evening

Cancer survivor Ger Daly is back at it again and organising the second annual Flicker of Hope Walk to raise funds for cancer research. It follows on from the of last year’s inaugural walk, which raised over €16,000, correctly deemed by Ger as a “phenomenal success”.

The walk will take place this evening, Friday, June 19. From around 9.30pm onwards, the town and woodland beside Ramor Lough will be filled with musicians and candlelight as part of the Flicker of Hope Walk. The walk will commence at 10.45pm. There will also be a special mention this year for the 'care givers’.
“People bought into the idea and we do little dedicated bags and insert candles in them. We are currently selling them and they are flying. We line up the bags on the night and we put little battery operated candles into them. As you walk past them, they shine and you can see to whom they are dedicated,” she explained.
Once again the Virginia Gospel Choir will be performing at the lake prior to the commencement of the walk.
“One of the features in this year’s walk will be a section of the route dedicated to the 168 children under the age of 15 who were diagnosed with cancer in a 12-month period. Some we are celebrating and, unfortunately, some we can only remember and honour. We know that childhood cancers are among the cruelest diseases for the entire family. Unfortunately cancer in children is on the increase but, thankfully, because of research, the survival rates have risen dramatically also,” said Ger.
“It is much easier to have cancer than it is to watch someone that you love with it,” said Ger of her own experience.
She battled breast cancer in 2007 and, since then, has initiated a number of cancer fundraisers to give something back and help others.
Ger believes that cancer research is the only way forward.
“It is through research that we are going to find a cure,” she said.
