Cavan devices were 'viable'- bomb disposal unit confirms

Two suspect objects discovered behind properties at a housing estate in Cavan Town yesterday evening were 'viable' explosive devices, the Army Bomb Disposal Unit has confirmed.

This afternoon, the Defence Forces issued a statement to say that their Army Bomb Disposal Team had since 'rendered safe the two viable Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs)' discovered on the Lakeview Estate, Cavan Town.

The Defence Forces deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team yetserday evening, November 25, on request from local members of An Garda Síochána after two suspect devices were discovered at the house house.

A cordon was established and surrounding houses were evacuated.

'The EOD team arrived on scene at 7.30 pm and made both devices safe. The devices were then removed to a secure military location for further examination and subsequently declared as viable IEDs. The scene was declared safe at 8.30pm. Material has been handed over to the Gardaí to assist them with their investigation,' the Defence Forces said.

There have now been 127 EOD call outs so far this year.

In 2014 there were 141 EOD calls outs to 53 viable devices.

Local Gardai continuing their investigations following the discovery of the suspected devices.
