No luck so far for locals in Seanad elections

There has been no luck for local Seanad hopefuls so far this week, with counts for the Cultural and Educational as well as Agricultural panels concluding yesterday.

Mullagh County Councillor Shane P O'Reilly failed to get elected to one of just five the hotly contested spots on the Agricultural Panel, being eliminated shortly before lunchtime on Tuesday in the seventh count with 32,044 votes.

The Fianna Fail representative told The Anglo-Celt: “You can never predict how the Seanad count will ever go, its something everyone says. I spent seven weeks out of my life canvassing for votes, do I regret it, not one bit, it was a fantastic experience.”

Cllr O'Reilly's elimination followed that of former local Judge Sean MacBride on Monday, a nominated candidate for the Cultural and Educational panel.

The Moville, Co Donegal-native fell from the running in the sixth count with just 18,264 votes, a race in which saw Fintan Warfield (SF), Keith Swanick and Lorraine Clifford-Lee (FF) and Kieran O'Donnell and Gabrielle McFadden (FG) elected.
