Golfer Leona finishes +3 in Rio on Day 1

Golfer Leona Maguire teed off at around 11:30am Irish time alongside Brazil’s Miriam Nagl and Malaysia’s Kelly Tan. She has just completed her round, and after a double bogey on the 10th, finished +3 on Day 1.

The Ballyconnell native has completed, who plays out of the Slieve Russell Golf Club, had achieved an early birdie, a bogie and par on the first three holes, completing them in four shots, three and four respectively.

But she has a disaster at the par-five 10th hole, putting for seven, dropping to +3.

She had to bounce back from another bogey midway through with a birdie at 16 to get back to +3, before a safe par on the 18th to finish for the day.

It's definitely not the start the Cavan star and world's No.1 amateur would have wanted, but she has tomorrow to make amends.

Leona has twin sister Lisa, herself a talented and accomplished golfer, by her side for support as her caddy.

Coverage is live on RTE’s News Now channel and app.

Everyone in Cavan and further afield is watching with interest ahead and cheering on Leona as she bids for Olympic Gold.
