One in four Summertime burglaries involve access through an open door or window, gardaí in Cavan and Monaghan have confirmed.

As such, they have launched a Summertime crime safety campaign advising homeowners to be vigilant in the fine weather and secure their properly to prevent against burglars.
The campaign, which is now in full swing, will run right through until the end of July.
Crime Prevention Officer for Cavan/Monaghan Garda Division, Sergeant Michael Duffy, is stressing the importance of something as simple as locking your windows and doors even if you are only going to be away from your property for a short time.
Gardaí will be manning information stands outside of shopping centres in the coming weeks in Cavan and Monaghan to engage with the community directly and hammer this message home.
They will be interacting with Community Alert Groups with a view to getting the message out there to homeowners.
Over €1.8M worth of property was stolen from sheds and garages nationwide in the last 12 months and the goods taken include bicycles, garden equipment and tools.
After using tools or bicycles during the summer months and long evenings, Sgt Duffy advises that they should all then be locked away. Homeowners are also encouraged to use good quality locks. Sgt Duffy also cautions against leaving lawnmowers on view when you go to the shop for a quick message or to collect children.
Further crime prevention advice includes ensuring your lawns are mowed while on holiday. Overgrown gardens suggest the occupants are away but also provide good cover for burglars.
Sgt Duffy also reminds to ensure your post does not accumulate inside a door where it can be seen from the outside. Inform he local post office to hold you post; also cancel deliveries such as milk and newspapers.
The Garda also advises against posting holiday photographs on social media until after you return.
The use of sensor lights or automatic lights on timers are also suggested.
Finally, homeowners are advised to use the property marking machine available through local community alert groups to stamp your valuables with your Eircode.
In the event that you goods are stolen, and recovered, in this way gardaí will be able return your property to you quickly.
