Ramp town no more?

Virginia’s reputation as ‘Ramp Town’ due to the number of speed restriction measures on the town’s roads will have to be reviewed. Cavan County Council addressed the issue with the removal of 26 ‘speed cushions’ from the Virginia - Ballyjamesduff Road R194. The ramps removed were located outside both Virginia and Ballyjamesduff town centres.

The speed bumps have been replaced with flashing speed indicator signs installed at both locations to encourage motorists to slow down and drive at appropriate speeds. The matter was raised at the December meeting of the Ballyjamesduff Municipal District authority.
At the meeting Cllr Paddy O’Reilly commended the local authority on the decision to remove the ramps.

Welcome
“The removal of the ramps on the Ballyjamesduff Road is a very welcome move. They have been the subject of a number of complaints by people over the years. I am delighted that they have been removed. It’s a pity it took the lifetime of the council to do this.”
In May 2017 Cllr O’Reilly referred to Virginia as ‘Ramp Town’ when he tabled a motion calling for a review of traffic calming measures on the Ballyjamesduff Road out of Virginia. Councillors said the speed restriction measures pushed heavy goods vehicles onto rural road ill equipped to accommodate them.
The removal of the bumps from the R194 was broadly welcomed by the members of the Ballyjamesduff Municipal District Authority.
