Leader funding success for local groups

Mullahoran Area Community Centre Association have recently been approved for €200,000 LEADER grant towards completing the refurbishment of their community centre.

Funding has been approved in principal for the project that was signed off on at the July 2019 committee meeting of Cavan LAG.

The project consists of the following: replacement of the roof with a well-insulated roof, replacement of ceilings throughout, insulation of all exterior walls, upgrade of heating/plumbing and electrical installations, upgrade of toilet facilities to ensure ease of access for disabled users, upgrade of meeting rooms and of basement rooms.

The Mullahoran Area Community Centre Association was buoyant about funding being approved, and are currently preparing a fundraising plan for the match 25% to complete the project. The group were also grateful to the support of the staff of Breffni Integrated for guiding them through the application process.

Mr. John Toland, Senior Development Officer of Breffni Integrated CLG the implementing partner of the Cavan LEADER programme stated that he was “delighted to see the benefits of LEADER funding being returned to a rural community such as Mullahoran who continue to strive to enhance their community amenities for all in the community.”

Meanwhile, more than €65,000 in LEADER funding has been allocated to five others projects.

In Cavan, the Belturbet Heritage Railway Company has been awarded €8,856 to carry out a feasibility study for the potential extension of the museum, and the provision of working railway track at Belturbet Railway Station.

In Monaghan four projects have been allocated funding for a variety of activities.

The Dundalk Salmon Anglers Association have received funding of €3,877 to conduct an advisory survey of parts of the River Fane, and a feeder stream of Lough Muckno, the results of which will be compiled and used to create an advisory report on pollution, habitat enhancement, and the promotion of biodiversity.

The Clones Failte CLG has been funded €7,000 to enable them to kick-start a pilot 'Youth Driving Lessons Programme' to assist young people with driving tests and lessons.

Monaghan Integrated Development has also awarded €21,750 to conduct community research on the needs of the migrant population in Co. Monaghan, which aims to identify and deliver a range of actions to support migrants in participating fully in life of the county.

Finally, the Lough Egish Community Development has been allocated €23,625 to undertake an area-based strategic plan/feasibility study in the Lough Egish region for economic and social development.
The LEADER programme is designed to support rural development projects initiated locally in order to revitalise rural areas and create jobs. The
Cavan LEADER Rural Development Programme (RDP) 2014-2020 was launched late in 2016 and to-date funding approvals are just over €3.9 million out of a total budget of €6.5 million for projects. Funding available through LEADER is administered by Breffni Integrated CLG.
