Cavan athletes Limerick bound for Community Games national finals

Hundreds of children from County Cavan will be among those competing in the Community Games National Finals in the University of Limerick this weekend.

The largest event over the weekend will be the Athletics finals but there are also competitions in football, soccer, pitch and putt, field events, tag rugby and much, much more.

As well as individuals competiting in track and field events and the relay races, there are a number of Cavan teams in competition over the weekend.

In Gaelic football, a team from the St Patrick's area of Cavan will compete in the semi final of the U10 mixed category on Sunday morning at 9am against Malahide. The Erne Valley U12 girls will be in action at 10am on Sunday in their semi final against Ashbourne, Co Meath. At 11am on Sunday, the St Patrick's U14 girls will line out in their semi-final clash with Kinnegad-Coralstown.

In soccer, the St Patrick's U12 boys will play Clara on Saturday morning at 10:30am.

Cuchulainns have two teams competing in the spikeball events - the boys will take on a Lisdoonvarna side in their semi final at 10am on Saturday; while the girls face Doora-Barefield at 11:30am.

The Erne Valley U15 Futsal Boys have been drawn against near neighbours Killoe, Co Longford, for their semi-final at 10:30am on Sunday morning.

From small beginnings over 50 years ago in 1967, the games have grown from just 3,000 children taking part to 172,000 this year. The children can choose from art, handwriting, table tennis, swimming, drama, dance, soccer, athletics - over 50 different events in all.

There are also approximately 20,000 volunteers involved with the Community Games every year, which is sponsored by Aldi.

A spokesperson said: "The Aldi Community Games August Festival is an occasion to celebrate all that is good in community activity and Irish lifestyle in general."
