Tributes after Cavan athlete dies

Tributes have been paid following the death of Cavan man and former international athlete Craig Lynch, who died tragically following a car accident at the weekend.

Mr Lynch (29) from Main Street, Shercock, was the sole occupant of the vehicle, which left the road near on the Kells to Oristown road at approximately 1:40am on Sunday morning.

Gardaí and emergency services attended at the scene on the R163 at Headfort, where Mr Lynch was pronounced dead a short time later.

His body was removed to the mortuary at Navan Hospital.

Mr Lynch, a father-of-one, represented his country at the European Championships back in 2016 in the 400m event. Also that year, it was claimed the title as fastest man in Ireland. In February 2017, the talented athlete was also named The Anglo-Celt Sports Person of the Year for his achievements in 2016.

Mr Lynch was also part of the Ireland team that ran in the 2015 World Relay Championships alongside Thomas Barr, Dara Kervick, Brian Murphy, Brian Gregan and Richard Morrissey.

Mr Lynch worked as a teacher at the Eureka Secondary School in Kells.

On Sunday night, Shercock AC posted on social media after news first broke: 'Following the tragic death of Craig Lynch, one of our most talented athletes, in a car accident last night, our thoughts and sympathies are with his parents, brothers, sisters, daughter, fiancée and all family members, indeed the whole Shercock community at this sad time. Rest in peace, Craig.'

Irish athlete and friend David Gillick also took to social media to express his sympathies to Mr Lynch's family: 'Absolutely heartbreaking to hear of the tragic death of Craig Lynch. Deepest condolences to his family and friends! A truly great guy with a brilliant outlook on life, a terrible loss to such a young life, he will missed by so many!'

Mr Lynch is survived by his loving parents, Patsy and Ann; sibings Gavin, Sharon, Joanna, Donal, Niamh and Richard; his daughter Sarah; beloved fiance, Amy; uncles; aunts; nephews; nieces; relatives and many friends.
