Young and old from right across Cavan flocked to the county town on Sunday for what has been described as a “magical Christmas experience”. The Christmas Lights Vehicle Parade is a shining example of festive community spirit.

This parade of tractors, cars, vans, bikes and trucks, each illuminated with fairy lights, has become a Christmas tradition for many families. The 2019 Parade was the biggest so far with over €30,000 raised thanks to the effort of the 350 vehicles stretching over 6.2km.
One of the parade organisers, Kevin Smith, expressed his delight with the reaction to this year’s event: “It was an amazing spectacle. There were over 64,000 Christmas lights on the vehicles. People were out lining the whole route.
“The remembrance tree at the Courthouse was fantastic. It allows people share their memories of love ones who have passed away. So many people were there to see the lights being turned on. Cathaoirleach, Shane P O’Reilly, gave a lovely speech. It was great to see so many people there."
As always the parade raises vital funds for charity: “The money will go to the Vincent McGee Trust, The Kevin Bell Trust, and the Aisling Brady Fund. The family of Norbet McMahon were raising funds for the Cavan Monaghan Palliative Care team.”
Kevin said the success of the event is down to the support of the public and a number of agencies: “We have to thank the Gardaí for all their help and the Clarke family for the use of the wonderful Equestrian Centre to facilitate the Christmas Lights Vehicle Parade. It’s a real team effort.”
