Two dead in Cavan crash

 

Two people have died following a fatal road traffic collision near Ballinagh earlier this evening.

The accident at Cashel Cross on the N55 between Ballinagh and Cavan Town happened at approximately 7pm this evening, February 28.

Gardaí are currently at the scene of the two vehicle traffic collision, as are other  emergency services.

The accident involved a car and a jeep.
Garda issued a statement a short time ago, which stated: “The driver, a man in his late 60s, and the passenger, a female also in her 60s were fatally injured following the collision. Their car is believed to have collided with a jeep. Both occupants of the car were pronounced dead at the scene a short time later."

The male driver of the jeep meanwhile has been taken to Cavan General Hospital as a precaution.
The scene at the crash site is currently closed to traffic and diversions are in place.

The crash site is now being preserved for examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

The road is expected to remain closed to traffic overnight.
