St Patrick's Day parades cancelled countywide

It looks set that all St Patrick’s Day parades have been cancelled across the county and nationwide following a directive from government on Monday evening last.

Event organisers across Cavan are now faced with tough decisions amid efforts to curb the spread of the Coronavirus nationwide.

The St Patrick’s Day parades in Cavan Town, Ballyconnell, Bailieborough, Ballyjamesduff, Ballinagh, Cootehill, Kilnaleck, Killeshandra and Swanlinbar had all officially confirmed that the parades have all been called off.

A decisions in respect of the Kingscourt parade will be made later this evening, though it too is expected to be axed.

Members of the Ballinagh Community Enterprise Association have decided to still erect bunting in the town to mark St Patrick’s Day despite the parade being culled. Tom Moore, from Spar, feels that it will help to lift some of the gloom that is prevailing in the country at present due to the spread of the virus.

“We want to keep things as upbeat and normal as is possible in the current climate in the town for the people,” he said.
