FROM THE ARCHIVE: Ballinagh win Junior League, 1976
This week’s archive photo is the Ballinagh team who won the Cavan Junior League final in 1976.
The report in the Celt noted:
“Ballinagh gained some recompense for their failure to win the Junior Championship earlier this year when they captured the Cavan Junior A football league title by overcoming a strong challenge from Drung to win by 4-4 to 3-1 in a most entertaining final at Breffni Park on Sunday last.
“As in their previous clashes in the championship semi-final, the issue was again close with the teams evenly matched.
“But while Drung played confidently in the early stages, Ballinagh had the edge throughout the second half and finished with a flourish to come out deserving winners.”
At half-time Drung were in front by 2-1 to 2-0 but Ballinagh hit the front early in the second half with a great goal by Martin Brady and with sub Eddie Halligan playing well, and late points from Halligan and TP Ennis and a spectacular goal from Gerry Murphy sealed the win.
Ballinagh: J Smith, John McDermott, T Maguire, B Galligan, B Reilly, R McDermott, S Gumley, TP Ennis (0-1), M Brady (1-1), B Gumley, S Galligan (1-0), Jarlath McDermott, P Galligan, J Martin, Gerry Murphy (2-0)
Subs: E Halligan (0-2) for B Gumley, Jospeh Murphy for Paraic Galligan
