Mountnugent GFC have been innovating online.

Mountnugent leading the way with social media brain-teasers

The general shutdown has seen sporting competitions come to a standstill but some innovative club officials are helping to ensure that their members have other distractions to keep them occupied.

Mountnugent GFC is one such club. PRO and senior player Ned Brunton and team-mate Josh O’Reilly got the ball rolling when they decided to put together an emoji competition focused on their senior squad and it took off from there.

“It kind of started from nothing, Josh and I started off messing around, doing a few emojis, trying to make them to describe a few players and management on our senior team  and then all of sudden we had about nine or 10 so we said we should make a few more of them and actually put them out to the public to see could they get them,” Ned explained.

“So I put them on the club Facebook page and into a the different few club Whatsapp groups and the response has been immense, we have nearly 30 entries in and there are a number of them, coming from people not even from our club.

“There were many different lads texting each of us up until nearly 2am Tuesday morning looking for clues and people of all ages just loved the craic of it. There are a lot of little networks building between members and some our pairing up, exchanging answers so there’s a competitive edge to it too.”

The lads realised that their clubmates were enjoying having some club-related activities to pass the time, some diversion in the current worrying situation.

“When Josh and I started to see the response from people, we said we may try and get something going here and keep these games coming, so we decided that a ‘How well do you know our club’ quiz would be good for St Patrick’s Day.

“We got out a few stats from our senior team and asked other questions from all different areas of our club, including the ladies club and juveniles and some fun questions as well.

“People are finding it difficult but some of the stalwarts have a lot of pride and reputation at stake. A crossword went out to the public on Thursday morning, again on our senior team and management and its seems that as were going along, more people are getting sucked in and engaged.

“We have one or two more games in the pipeline too, they are coming over the weekend. We did it to try bring a bit of humour and for people to be occupied during these strange times.”

And the good news for Mountnugent followers and even those from neighbouring areas is there’s still time to enter.

“The entry lines don’t close until Saturday night for the emojis and quiz and Sunday night for the crossword so there’s still lots of time to enter and don’t feel like you have to be from the club to participate, there is many people even from across the border in Meath chancing their luck.

“There’s prizes at stake too and bragging rights so that’s making it even more interesting. It’s great to have a good vibe around the club during times like this,” said Ned.
