Almost €130K in community funding for Cavan and Monaghan

Some €127,444 in funding has been allocated to the Community Call initiatives in Cavan and Monaghan in the current Coronavirus crisis.
The funding was confirmed today by Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Heather Humphreys.

The news comes as the local authorities in both counties, which are co-ordinating the effort, confirmed that they received some 200 calls  to the Cavan line and around 150 to the Monaghan line in the first two weeks of operation.

Minister Humphreys confirmed the allocations of €65,197 to Cavan and €62,247 to Monaghan.

She said: “The Emergency Fund will provide immediate grants to local groups that are participating in the Government’s Community Call initiative, which is being led here by Monaghan County Council and Cavan County Council.”

The fund will prioritise organisations delivering frontline services such as Meals on Wheels.

“Local community and voluntary groups are supporting significant numbers of vulnerable people, many of whom are self-isolating, to get through this crisis. The funding will help these groups to cover the costs of their fantastic work,” continued the Minister.

“Collaboration and partnership between the community and voluntary sector and the State are key to responding to the needs of our communities at this difficult time. These groups are making a real difference and I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to them,” she said, also paying tribute to the staff at both local authorities.

“No one does community spirit like Monaghan and Cavan, and the teamwork we are seeing locally is a testament to that,” she concluded.

The CEO of Monaghan County Council, Eamonn O’Sullivan, has paid tribute to staff and volunteers. “These are very strange and unprecedented times that we find ourselves in, distancing ourselves from our family and community. But we would like to reassure those in our communities that are vulnerable or in need of a bit of help that they are not alone. We are working together with other state agencies and community groups to ensure that if you need help, it is there for you. The local authority helpline is there as a safety net, to ensure that everyone is looked after.”
