Garda Covid checkpoints continue over weekend

Members attached to the local Road Policing Unit are continuing to carry out random and planned checkpoints across the Cavan-Monaghan Garda Division this May Bank Holiday Weekend.

One encounter highlighted on social media saw members attached to the Cavan RPU stop a jeep yesterday (Saturday, May 2) with what can only be described as a well-worn tyre.

A Fixed Charge Penalty Notice was issued to the driver.

‘Cavan RPU were on #Covid19 checkpoint this evening when they encountered a jeep with a worn tyre.  FCPN to issue. Physical distancing, exercise within 2km of your residence only. We will continue to #FlattenTheCurve #StayAtHome’ gardai posted on Twitter following the incident.

John O’Reilly, Garda Chief Superintendent for the Cavan-Monaghan area, highlights that there will be a very visible Garda presence across both counties this weekend: “Our members will operate an extensive network of checkpoints across both counties this weekend, checking public compliance with the travel restrictions in place as part of Covid-19 public health guidelines.”

He added that there has been “very good compliance with the travel restrictions to date, and thanked the public for this.

However, he said it is vital that this continues over the coming days and weeks.

“It will save lives. In particular, we would ask people who are thinking of travelling to parks, tourist locations or holiday homes outside of the two kilometre limit this weekend not to do so. If you are stopped at a checkpoint, you will be turned back.”
