Weather forecast: Sunny spells, heavy showers and thunder on the way again

Mist and fog will lift gradually this morning. Western areas will be rather cloudy with a few scattered showers, according to the latest weather forecast for Cavan and Monaghan from Met Éireann as of 6am this morning.

The national weather forecaster says: While better sunny spells will develop in eastern areas, some heavy showers or possibly thunderstorms will break out this afternoon or evening in eastern and central areas with the potential for very heavy downpours. Temperatures will be lower than recent days in the west with highs of 15 to 18 degrees Celsius this afternoon in light northerly breezes but temperatures of 20 or 21 degrees are likely in eastern areas.

The pollen forecast is high today (Tuesday); while the solar UV index will also be high in sunshine.

Tonight is promised mild and mostly dry in western counties but there will be showers in eastern areas. Overnight lows of 11 or 12 degrees Celsius.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) will be a rather cloudy day but dry in many western areas, perhaps just the odd shower and possibly some mist or drizzle on the parts of the coast. In eastern counties there will be some showers especially during the morning but they will die away later. Winds light northerly and afternoon highs of 15 to 18 degrees Celsius.

Wednesday night is predicted to be mild and misty overnight in lows of 9 to 13 degrees Celsius. Most places will be dry, with just the odd shower here and there.

The national outlook is for changeable weather and temperatures around normal for mid June.

Looking ahead to Thursday, we can expect bright spells and scattered showers - some heavy in parts of the east and southeast but there will be dry bright periods also. However more persistent rain will move into eastern counties during the afternoon and evening. Afternoon highs of 16 to 20 degrees Celsius in very light northerly breezes.

Persistent and at times heavy rain is coming Thursday night but should clear during Friday morning, with sunny spells developing. There will be some showers in western counties. Winds will be light southwesterly with afternoon highs of 16 to 20 degrees Celsius highest in eastern areas.

The forecast for the weekend is changeable and breezy weather. There will be some rain at times in most places, with some heavy falls in places on Saturday and again later Sunday but there will be dry bright periods also, especially in eastern areas. Breezy on Saturday with highs of 16 to 18 degrees Celsius and fresh southwest winds, temperatures of 17 to 22 degrees on Sunday in southerly winds.
