Laragh and Crosserlough will meet in the opening round.

Dates fixed for camogie championship finals

Last weekend in September will see finals played off

Cavan camogie board have announced the date for their county finals.

The Junior, Intermediate and Senior Championship finals will take place on the weekend of September 26-27.

The camogie leagues will begin on July 17 with the first championship matches taking place on August 26. There are three teams in the Senior Championship this year, namely Crosserlough, Laragh and Denn, with Ballinagh, Lacken, Kill and Castletara in the intermediate and Drumgoon, Laragh and Crosserlough in the junior.

In the Senior Championship, defending champions Crosserlough meet Laragh in the opening round on Wednesday, August 26. All three teams will play off with the top two advancing to the final.

The intermediate line-up is Ballinagh v Lacken and Kill v Castletara on the same date, with the two winners meeting a fortnight later.

Meanwhile, handball is the last of the GAA sports to resume. Courts have been locked up since March and will not open until July 20, after which non-competitive singles matches will be permitted.

Competition will resume on August 10 in singles but there appears to be no doubles handball permitted for the foreseeable future.

“As an indoor sport, the requirements of the return to play were challenging,” stated GAA Director of Player, Club and Games Administration Feargill McGill.

Cavan were particularly hard hit by the cessation of handball activity, with two juvenile doubles pairs – Niall Magee and Matthew Smith in U15 and Oliver McCrystal and Adam McKenna in U16 – having qualified for All-Ireland 40x20 finals which were down for decision on the weekend after the lockdown commenced.

It is thought those finals may be held over until the new year, with the focus to turn to 60x30 handball when action recommences next month.
