Bailieborough Community School to get new extension

Bailieborough Community School has been given the green light by the Department of Education to proceed with plans to develop new accommodation at the east Cavan school in an investment that could be as high as €2M.

The permanent extension will include four 58m2 general classrooms, one multi-media room and one Science lab and prep area.

Cavan Monaghan TD, Brendan Smith (FF) has just announced the approval, which was given by Minister for Education, Norma Foley.

"This is a very welcome development for all in this school community and I wish to compliment the principal, Ms Martha Lievens, the Board of Management, the Parents Association and the wider school community on making this successful application," he said.

"I am delighted to have supported the application and I had highlighted to the Minister the need for this additional accommodation," added Deputy Smith.

His party colleague Niamh Smyth (TD) has also welcomed the approval.

She too congratulated all those involved in the successful application.

“I want to commend principal Martha Lievens, deputy principal Fergal Kenny, their staff, Board of Management on all their hard work to date, not only on this application but also the safe return to school for so many of their pupils and staff," she said.

Deputy Smyth, herself from Bailieborough, added: “I also want to thank Minister Foley and her Department officials who I have been engaging with for a number of months to see this application succeed.”

Minister for Rural Affairs, Heather Humphreys, has also welcomed the news. “Investing in our schools and colleges is of paramount importance, particularly given the demands they face in terms of accommodation in light of COVID-19. I’m delighted to see this investment in Bailieborough Community School today," said the Fine Gael TD.
