Four arrests for alleged intimidation of witnesses in capital murder trial

Four people have been arrested in connection with an investigation into alleged witness intimidation in the recent capital murder trial of a man found guilty of killing Kilnaleck native, Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe during a credit union raid in January 2013.

Aaron Brady, New Road, Crossmaglen, Co Armagh, was found guilty in August of the capital murder by an 11 to one majority jury verdict at the Central Criminal Court.

He is due be sentenced next Monday, October 12.

Gardaí attached to the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (GNBCI) have been investigating allegations of witness intimidation, perverting the course of justice and the unlawful use of mobile phones in the prison environment, related to the recent criminal trial of DPP versus Aaron Brady.

Today (Thursday), October 8, Detective Gardaí attached to the Serious Crime Review Team in the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (GNBCI) arrested four persons in relation to this investigation.

All four persons are currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 in Mountjoy, Ballymun, Bridewell and Raheny Garda Stations for the proper investigation of the offences concerned.

Investigations are ongoing.

Earlier this month, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris told a meeting of the Cavan Joint Policing Committee (JPC) that the investigation into the death of Kilnaleck native, Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe “very much is still ongoing” and once again appealed to the public and anyone with information to come forward to assist in bringing others involved to justice.

Comm Harris' comments came after Fine Gael's TP O'Reilly complimented the force on securing a conviction in the Det Donohoe murder case.

“It was a major achievement, a great success,” said Cllr O'Reilly.

Kilnaleck-native Det Donohoe was killed was shot and murdered in the course of a robbery at the Louth Credit Union, and the criminal investigation into his death remains live as other suspects remain to be brought before the courts.

“That remains a live investigation,” Comm Harris told the meeting. “There was an overall conspiracy that we continue to investigate. It's very obvious that there are other individuals that we wish to bring to justice. That investigation we obviously worked through to [one] trial, we take stock and see what next we do to advance that."

He reiterated also: “I would say if there is anyone in the public who has information, they should come forward with that to An Garda Síochána and support us in that investigation, which very much is still ongoing.”
