Libraries extends book delivery service during Covid

While the community can't come to the libraries for books, Cavan County Library Service are bringing the books to the community.

At the outset of the pandemic, Cavan Library Service introduced the delivery of reading material to vulnerable members of the community who are cocooning.

The initiative is run with the support of Cavan County Council’s Roads and Water Services Departments, along with Cavan Civil Defence.

With the introduction of Level 5 restrictions, Cavan Library Service has seen a surge in requests for the service, and it is anticipated that this number will continue to grow over the coming weeks.

“We have seen first-hand during the past seven months how the regular supply of reading material has proved to be a lifeline to readers during this trying time,” said Cavan County Librarian Emma Clancy.

“Rural isolation is very difficult at the best of times, but this has been truly amplified during this pandemic, when the regular visits of family and friends have often not been possible. I am pleased that our dedicated library staff, with the assistance of our colleagues in Cavan County Council and Cavan Civil Defence, have been able to play a role in combating isolation and loneliness in the community.”

To ensure that this service is easily accessible to those currently cocooning within the community, library membership is not required. To avail of this free service please contact the Library Service by phoning 049 437 8505, emailing library@cavancoco.ie, or calling the Cavan Community Call Helpline on 1800 300 404.

For those not eligible for the delivery service, they can still avail of the huge range of online services freely available through the library service, such as e-books and e-audiobooks, online newspapers, magazines and language and other training courses.

A range of online events including storytime, poetry readings and lectures continue to be delivered throughout, and are achieving phenomenal viewing figures
