Residents highlight poor condition of Bailieboro lane

Curkish Lane in Bailieborough, which connects onto the Kingscourt Road, is a popular route with walkers, but the surface at one end has deteriorated and become uneven.

There are around 50 houses along the road. The portion from the top of the hill, back into Bailieborough, was repaired some years ago and is still in good repair, according to one resident Kitty Clarke.

However she says that the segment, which leads onto the Kingscourt road, has a poor surface. Kitty (74) says it is “not safe to walk on and it is in a poor state now for well over a dozen years”.

She is calling on Cavan County Council to urgently resurface the road.

“We are blue in the face trying to get the council to repair it. You are not able to walk on it. It is not suitable for elderly people to walk on and I am one myself,” said Kitty.

“It is a route that loops back into the town and is popular with walkers and covers a distance of around one and a half miles,” she added.

Kitty queried how the local authority could find money to upgrade footpaths in the area but not to repair this particular stretch of road.

Responding to a query from The Anglo-Celt, a spokesperson for the council explained:

“Sections of the L-7569 (in the townlands of Rakeevan & Corkish, Bailieborough Town) require investment in terms of road reconstruction and drainage works under a Road Works Programme.

“The L-7569, along with all other roads in the district, was surveyed and given consideration when drawing up the current adopted three-year Road Works Programme, which runs from 2019-2021.”

The council outline the criteria for prioritising roads, adding: “Unfortunately, the L-7569 did not make the current programme. However, this road will be considered, along with all other roads in this district, for inclusion in the next Road Works Programme, which will be reviewed next year.

“In the meantime, as with all the roads on our network, we will endeavour to upkeep these roads as best as possible given the limited resources available to us.”
