Remembering Cootehill businessman - Tom Brady Jnr

Tom Brady Jnr (Thomas A. Brady) Druncondra, and late of Lakeview House, Ballybay Road, Cootehill, was for many years a respected hotelier and auctioneer at marts in Cootehill, Carnaross, Carrigallen and Mohill.

Before taking up the gavel, Tom, along with his brothers Eugene and Jimmie and their father Tom Brady Snr, entered into the pig industry and became suppliers to bacon factories, including McCarren’s in Cavan.

In 1965, Tom was involved in the setting-up and opening of the family-run mart at Cootehill. His auctioneering style was popular with the local farmers who flocked to the cattle sales each week.

In 1975, the Brady family purchased the famous White Horse Hotel, Cootehill. Tom Jnr and his late wife Cathy (nee McCabe) took an active role in the running of the hotel and, through their extensive business acumen, the hotel became a nationally recognised establishment.

Couples were known to travel from the four corners of Ireland to hold their wedding reception at Brady’s White Horse Hotel.

Tom also took a keen interest in the running of the Hillgrove Hotel in Monaghan. He retired from active business about seven years ago.He was predeceased by his late parents Tom and Nan Brady and his sisters, Nancy and Mary. He is survived by his brothers Eugene, Jimmie and Patrick. Tom Brady Jnr passed away on April 22 last. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
