National award for O'Keeffe

Camogie

Cavan dual star Roisín O’Keeffe added yet another award to her collection last weekend when she was named at midfield on the camogie Soaring Stars team.

O’Keeffe enjoyed a stellar year in 2020, winning a county SFC medal with Lacken as well as starring for the Cavan camogie team as they won the Nancy Murray Cup and went all the way to the All-Ireland Junior Championship final, where they lost narrowly to Armagh at Kingspan Breffni.

This latest award follows on from O’Keeffe being selected as the Cavan Player of the Year in the Gaelic Life Ulster Club All-Stars scheme last month. The Monaghan-based schoolteacher scored 0-11 in her club’s win over a fancied Crosserlough side, the defending champions, in that county decider.

The Soaring Stars camogie awards are effectively the All-Stars for all grades outside of senior camogie and the Cavan woman was up against stiff opposition from leading counties at junior and intermediate levels. Intermediate All-Ireland winners Down dominated the selection with six players making the cut; two from Premier Junior champions Armagh made it and O’Keeffe was the sole representative from Cavan.

Her award comes as a significant boost to the sport in the county, which is flying high at present with the county side enjoying such a brilliant run after many years of inactivity.
