A Cavan photographer’s work has been selected as a finalist in Ireland’s newest national wildlife photographic competition, the winner of which will be announced later today (Wednesday).

The image, shot by Belturbet-native Tristan Bane, was chosen as one of the final 12 for the ‘Eye on Nature’ competition, hosted by RTÉ, National Botanic Gardens of Ireland and the Office of Public Works (OPW).

Mr Bane’s photo is of a fox cub on logs, and was taken at Ravenhill near Belfast in Co Antrim.

RTÉ’s Mooney Goes Wild and The Today Show launched the competition in January 2021 and by closing date had received more than 7,000 entries.

The judging panel consist of Matthew Jebb (National Botanic Gardens), Niall Hatch (BirdWatch Ireland) and Sheena Jolley (acclaimed wildlife photographer).

Another photo to make the shortlist is one by Andrew Yeates from Co Meath of two Kingfishers mating on the River Boyne in Navan.

On St Patrick’s Day, March 17, Derek Mooney will announce the winner live on the Today Show and present the photographer with the inaugural trophy and a prize of €1,000.

In the coming months, an exhibition of the finalists’ photos will travel to OPW sites across the country.
