The car which was driven at speeds of 180kmph on the N3, halted only after gardaí deployed a stinger to burst its tyres.

Car travelled at 180kmph on N3

A coked-up driver was detected doing speeds of up to 180kmph on the N3 last week.

Gardaí in an unmarked patrol car attached to Virginia station witnessed the incident late on March 15, after which the driver failing to stop when signalled to pull over.

The car was observed performing a number of dangerous overtakes until, with the assistance of Bailieborough gardaí and Cavan Roads Policing Unit, a stinger was deployed and the vehicle brought to a stop.

It transpired the driver of the vehicle was disqualified from driving.

He also tested positive for cocaine.

The driver was subsequently charged to court and his car taken off the road.

Fixed Charge Penalty Notices (FCPNs) will also issue to both the driver and passenger for non essential journeys.

It was one of several driving incidents that occurred in Cavan over the past week.

Another motorist was stopped in Loch Gowna at an Operation Fanacht checkpoint and found to have no insurance, NCT or tax on his car. He also tested positive for cannabis.

Members of the Cavan Roads Policing Unit carrying out a static checkpoint on the N55, meanwhile, pulled over a van that had stopped short of gardaí and proceeded to travel up a nearby lane.

The driver was already disqualified, and he too tested positive for cannabis use.

In Cavan Town, two more drivers tested positive for cocaine use. Both drivers provided blood samples and will appear before court in due course.
