Members of Cavan Tidy Towns Committee and volunteers gathered in the Market Square on Saturday morning to unveil their new three tier water retainer planters. The group says they bring colour and a feel good factor to the area and form a nice focal point for the area.

Easter weekend brightened by blooms in Cavan Town

Momentum is now on the side of Cavan Town's Tidy Town’s Committee who were successful in getting out up to a thousand people to carry out litter picking over a wide area recently. Now they have set about adding colour and atmosphere to the streets and are confident that when IBAL Litter League judges come round they'll start moving up the charts once again.

The Secretary of the Cavan Tidy Towns Committee Paul Lynch said the committee purchased new three tier water retainer planters last year courtesy of Municipal District funding. The local group officially unveiled them on Saturday in the Market Square in a blaze of colour.

As the sun shone gloriously, the colourful blooms in the planters won lots of admiration and approval from passers by.

"Initially we were going to do some remedial works on the approach roads but with the Covid situation, we had to change our plans because we could not get contractors."

The beauty of these water retaining planters is that the flowers only have to watered once a week. The Tidy Town's logo’s are attached to each which showcase an array of blooming flowers in a most attractive display.

Cavan Town Tidy Towns volunteers now hope to purchase more of these innovative planters, and the work being carried out in conjunction with the County Council Horticulturist, Bernie McGovern, "who has been such a great support to us".

The committee want to put many more of these planters around the town in conjunction with the County Council as the presence of lovely flowers is uplifting in these challenging times.

"We want to keep the town bright and keep the momentum going. We have done loads of litter picks and litter in Cavan is the responsibility of everybody. We all need to play a part – businesses, individuals, newspapers and the County Council."

The Tidy Towns Committee are proud of the fact they have been a catalyst in encouraging in the region of one thousand people to take part in localised litter picking.

"We have specific WhatsApp groups set up for residential groups, local business, our committee and litter pickers. We are endeavouring to communicate the message as best we can and it is working.

"When we put out a text, we get thirty plus people to come out to do a litter pick on a Saturday morning. We want to keep the good work going", said Paul Lynch.
