Recognising Cavan’s sporting women

Blackmore's Cavan connections revealed

The achievements of women in sport with strong Cavan connections were recognised at the April meeting of Cavan County Council. The acknowledgement of the abundant female talent in the field of sporting excellence was taken under the heading of Votes of Congratulations.

Cathaoirleach Sarah O'Reilly first spoke of the achievement of Rachael Blackmore, who it was noted has a strong Cavan Connection. Ms Blackmore, whose grandmother, the council heard, was Patricia Shaffrey hailing from Bailieborough. Other notable achievements in the last number of months by golfer Leona Maguire, Cavan para powerlifter Britney Arendse, soccer player Leanne Kiernan and AFL star Aishling Sheridan were also noted in the discussion.

Cllr Shane P O'Reilly pointed out that Ms Blackmore's uncle Peter Shaffrey was the former owner of the Percy French hotel in Ballyjamesduff and that Rachael spend time there in her youth. Cllr O'Reilly said that the recent achievement of Britney Arendse, who will represent Ireland in the Tokyo Olympics, should also be noted.

Cllr Patricia Walsh said such achievements reflect the depth of talent among the sporting community of Cavan, while Cllr Philip Brady said Aisling Sheridan is “an inspiration to all young female athletes”.

Cllr Brady also referred to the fundraising efforts of Cavan Camogie who completed a 120km run for charity.
