World Refugee day event

Cavan County Local Development (CCLD) will host an event to celebrate World Refugee Day today (Wednesday), June 16 at the Market Square in Cavan Town.

“CCLD would like to honour the courage, strength and determination or women, men and children who are forced to flee their homes under threats of violence,” say organisers.

The event will run from 9.30am to 4.30pm and give people an opportunity to hear real stories of displaced people. It will include a show of short films, chronicling the reasons people leave their homes, the journeys they take and the challenges they face in new environments.

In what is expected to be one of this first formal appointments since taking the chain of office last Monday, Cathaoirleach Clifford Kelly will also attend the celebration.

“The aim of the event is to break down barriers, tackle misinformation and dispel rumours” and “to build social links”, say organisers.
