The theft is the latest to occur in the local region after a spate of such thefts some years ago.

In 2019, ESB Networks reported that gangs have managed to steal an estimated €100,000 worth of cabling. There had been 43 break-ins at substations that year, double that of 2018 and 2017.

In 2018, significant damage was caused to a vacant property in the Killeshandra area when thieves removed copper wiring from throughout the house; whilst in 2017 a brazen gang stole an estimated €4,000 worth of copper wiring from the gated Eir compound at Moynehall. The theft occurred on dates between June 28-29, when thieves gained entry to the gated compound before making off with the costly wiring.
