Stage is set for last eight of SFC

Football

The stage is set for the quarter-finals of the Senior Football Championship this weekend following the culmination of the group stages.

Gowna v Mullahoran on Sunday evening is arguably the tie of the round and that local derby should draw a large crowd to Kingspan Breffni, which hosts all four quarter-finals.

Gowna have been banging in the goals while the Dreadnoughts have impressed in beating Killygarry and Castlerahan and were beaten only by a last-minute Barry Reilly wonder point against Kingscourt last weekend.

The Stars, for their part, have, like Gowna, a perfect record to date. Ramor dropped just one point, a draw against Ballinagh, and those two sides clash again. Elsewhere, Cavan Gaels, with three wins and a draw to date, take on a Laragh side who are appearing in their first SFC quarter-final in decades.

Meanwhile, Castlerahan, who were in five finals between 2015 and 2019 and lost last year’s semi-final in extra time, find themselves in a relegation play-off where they meet Killygarry, meaning one of those sides who would be regarded as strong will be relegated to intermediate ranks, where they will be joined by Shercock or Lacken.
