Local playgrounds to be refurbished

Cavan County Council is set to carry out refurbishment works at some playgrounds.

The local authority has published a tender for the refurbishment of six sites across the county, with works to take place in Ballyjamesduff, Kingscourt, Con Smith Park in Cavan town, Belturbet, Cootehill and Killeshandra.

Existing tarmac, rubber and bark material will be removed and replaced. Kerbing will be installed, along with fencing and landscaping. New play equipment is also planned.

Issues at the sites are regularly raised at council meetings, with concerns around safety and broken equipment among those raised.

At the November meeting of Ballyjamesduff MD, Cllr Trevor Smith (FG) highlighted problems with the town’s playground, with the surface said to be lifting. He said the site has been closed all summer. “Families thought works might happen sooner,” he said.

Cllr Shane P O’Reilly (IND) highlighted problems with vandalism. He claimed it cost over €3,000 to replace a slide at the park in Mullagh after it was burned by vandals.

Submissions on the tender are due before December 17.

It’s expected works would be carried out in January or February of next year.
