Council urges caution ahead of Storm Barra

Warnings are in place across the country.

People in Cavan are being urged to be carefull tomorrow and Wednesday as Storm Barra is set to bring strong winds and heavy rain to the country.

A yellow weather warning is in place for Cavan ahead of its arrival.

Met Éireann has issued its highest alert, a red warning, for parts of the south west, including sea areas off the west coast. Clare, Cork and Kerry are under a red alert from tomorrow morning.

Storm Barra is expected to bring very strong winds and spells of heavy rain across Ireland.

The forecaster says winds will be strongest in western coastal counties with severe or damaging gusts possible. It says southerly winds, later becoming to northwesterly, will reach mean speeds of 65 to 80 km/hr with severe or damaging gusts of up to 130 Km/ hr, possibly higher in coastal areas.

Disruption to power and travel are likely in parts of the west.

Heavy rain will bring localised flooding. There will also be high waves at sea and a significant possibility of coastal flooding on south and west coasts.

The warning for Cavan will come into place at 2am tonight and remain active until 6pm on Wednesday.

Cavan County Fire Service has said that "motorists should consider whether journeys are necessary and, if travelling, expect the unexpected". It says its members have dealt with a number of fallen trees in recent weeks and more are expected throughout Tuesday and Wednesday.

Limerick, Galway, Mayo, Waterford, Wexford, Wicklow, Dublin, Meath and Louth are under a status orange warning, with the remainder of the country and Northern Ireland under yellow warnings.

Schools in all red and orange areas will not open tomorrow after a directive from the Department of Education. The University of Limerick has also said it's to close.

Vaccine and test centres will also close tomorrow in some parts of the west and south west.

Supermarket chain Aldi has said its outlets in Cork and Kerry will remain closed tomorrow and those in Clare will close at 3pm.
