Roads and greenways in Cavan and Monaghan get €23m

Cavan County Council has received €16.23 million to progress major projects including realignment works on the N55 in the south of the county, upgrading of part of the N87 in the west, and preparatory work on the Virginia Bypass.

A total of €23 million has been allocated for national roads and greenways for Cavan and Monaghan in 2022.

"This substantial funding will enable the continuation of upgrading the national road network in both counties and implement safety measures at a number of locations where there is heavy traffic," said Brendan Smith TD in welcoming the news.

Specific funding has been allocated in respect of the Corduff to Killydoon stretch on the N55 totalling €7 million. This is the last phase of the N55 improvement works.

In the west, €2.3 million is being provided for upgrading the Gartaquill to Ballyconnell stretch on the N87.

In the east, €3.3 million has been allocated for safety improvement works at Lisgrea Cross on the N3. Also a total of €400,000 has been allocated towards the further planning and design of the proposed Virginia By-Pass, while €200,000 has also been allocated in respect of safety measures on the Virginia/Maghera road.

A further allocation of €400,000 has also been made in respect of necessary upgrading of the Dublin Road, Cavan Town.

Monaghan

Funding worth €6.6 million has been allocated to Monaghan County Council in respect of the National Road Network and the development of Greenways in 2022.

€1 million is being provided towards the N2 Ardee to South of Castleblayney By-Pass and €2.1 million on the Castleblayney By-Pass South. There is also a provision of €250,000 for Ballynacarry New Bridge.

Significant allocations have also been made for other road developments throughout counties Cavan and Monaghan.

Greenway

Meanwhile €1 million has been allocated towards the development of the Sligo/Blacklion project which will lead on to Enniskillen and which Deputy Smith predicts will become "an important cross-border amenity".

"I compliment both Cavan County Council and Monaghan County Council on their planning and design of these road projects which are now being progressed with this funding,” stated Deputy Brendan Smith.
