Singing in the New Year in Townhall

HIGHLIGHT Murfi to perform two different shows in two nights

January is a particularly musical month for Townhall Theatre as they host three fantastic gigs. Getting the ball rolling this Saturday (January 8) The Highstool Prophets take to the stage with their rip roaring show.

Having wowed many fans in the Abbeylands when live music first returned this is a show many are looking forward to. Formed during the All -Ireland Fleadh in Cavan in 2012 and have been singing, performing, and playing the very best of Irish music all over the world since. Throughout the course of the band’s union, they have won over the hearts of music lovers from all walks of life; performing a mix of Irish ballads and folk songs with a unique twist. The show on Saturday January 8 has a 5pm start time.

Contest

Later in the month Cavan Institute present their “win big songwriting contest 2022” final. The show is scheduled to take place on Monday, January 17. Although this is a free ticket-only event booking is essential. Budding songwriters from secondary schools around the country will be performing their songs for a panel of music industry judges, hoping to win the amazing prizes on offer.

These prizes include recording equipment for the winning school, a musical instrument voucher for the winning students and the winning song recorded, mixed, and mastered with graphic design. This prize package is worth over €2,000. This competition is brought to you by the Music and Sound Production and Creative Digital Media courses at Cavan Institute and promotes the wonderful art of song writing.

Brothers

On Friday January 21 The Lost Brothers make their debut at Townhall Theatre. Oisin Leech and Mark McCausland, from Meath and Tyrone, have been making music together since 2007. Their sound is inspired by a range of influences that include the writings of Shane McGowan, the poetry of Patrick Kavanagh, and the paintings of Jack B Yeats.

With fans ranging from Iggy Pop to Elvis Costello the duo have been honing their craft for over a decade and this is sure to be another memorable show from the dynamic duo.

On the theatre front there is great excitement as Mikel Murfi prepares to bring two one-man shows to Townhall. The extraordinary theatre creator presents The Man In The Woman’s Shoes (Friday, February 11) and I Hear You And Rejoice (Saturday, February 12) for the delectation of Cavan audiences next month.
