Library launches Bishop MacKiernan Collection

This year’s lecture was delivered by Monsignor Liam Kelly

A fascinating collection of historical and ecclesiastical literature was launched by Cavan County Library Service at the annual Bishop MacKiernan Memorial Lecture, which took place at Johnston Central Library, Cavan on Tuesday, February 8.

The annual Bishop MacKiernan Lecture, which is delivered in memory of Bishop Francis MacKiernan, Bishop of Kilmore from 1972 to 1998, is organised by Cavan County Library Service in collaboration with Breifne Historical Society - Cumann Seanchais Bhreifne.

This year’s lecture was delivered by Monsignor Liam Kelly who gave a lecture entitled, 'A Bishop for the Shortest Time: Bernard Finegan (1837-1887)'. The talk aired online on Tuesday, February 8, at 7.30pm and is now available to view at www.cavanlibrary.ie

The event also marks the launch of the Bishop MacKiernan Collection, which was given on permanent loan to Cavan County Library Service in 2007. This remarkable collection of more than 2,000 volumes includes journals, religious books, Irish and general history books, and Local Studies items.

The collection is available to view by appointment only in Johnston Central Library. An index is available at www.cavanlibrary.ie. For further information on the collection, email archives@cavancoco.ie
