Denn churches plan Cannonball Run

The community of Denn and surrounding parishes hope to support their local churches with a unique fundraiser - a ‘Cannonball Run’ - which will see thousands of bright coloured bouncy balls released down a local hillside.

The family fun day event will start from 4pm on Saturday, July 30, at what is locally known as Sandy’s Brae, next to Denn Parish Church.

The event is in aid of Denn Parish Church, St Matthew’s Church in Drumavaddy/ Crosskeys and local charities.

Raymond Heaslip is one of the co-organisers of the event. He promises that ‘The Great Denn Cannonball Run’ will be “sight to behold” when bright-coloured balls are fired from a canon over a series of races. Prizes have been generously sponsored by the local community.

The organising committee are meanwhile looking for fun teams, both young and old, to participate and help with reloading the canon.

“We wanted to do something unique, that people would remember and, most of all with all that’s happened in our community in past number of years, we want to pick everyone up. It works along the same lines as a duck run, but with bouncy balls. It’s a family fun evening, that’s the most important part of this. Parents will be able to enjoy this with their children. This is a coming together of the parishes. It’s to bring the community together as one and remember what a great part of Cavan we live in. And, when all the balls are run to the bottom of the hill, we’re hoping to organise teams that’ll bring them all the way back up to the top again for the next race.”

Entries to ‘The Great Denn Cannonball Run’ can be purchased on the online SumUp store by searching Denn Canonball Run, at €5 per ball, or five balls for €20.

The run will coincide also with the Festival of the Hills, which on Friday, July 29, will host ‘The Friday Night Show’ with music by Ian Pickens, tickets €10 (payable at the door), at Drumavaddy Community Centre.
