Sadness at passing of respected Virginia pharmacist

There was huge sadness in Virginia and its surrounding areas with news of the passing of well-known pharmacist and businessman Hugh Barney O’Donoghue.

A hugely respected icon in the town, he died today, aged 85.

Hugh Barney owned O’Donoghue’s Pharmacy on Main Street in Virginia, which was first opened by his father, Hugh Bernard, in 1912. It continues the 110 year legacy of serving the people of Virginia and the surrounding areas.

Hugh Barney took over the running of the pharmacy from his father and when he retired and in time, he passed it on to his son Brian. There have been three generations of O’Donoghues running the pharmacy, now called O’Donoghue’s totalhealth Pharmacy.

After his retirement, Hugh Barney played an active role for some years in the business, sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience and his words of wisdom with both staff and customers. He also enjoyed spending time with his wife Bernie, his children and grandchildren. He was an avid golfer and an active member of the Men’s Sheds in Virginia.

When word of his passing broke, many of his customers posted their memories of him on social media with the following words to describe Hugh Barney being used by many: A pure gentleman, compassionate, understanding, empathetic, great integrity, good fun, always had time for a chat and was as good as any doctor!

Hugh Barney is survived by his wife Bernie, his six children, Ann, Tadhg, Gráinne, Róisin, Brian and Tom, their partners and his adored grandchildren (18 of them), his brother, sisters and a wide circle of friends.

His remains will repose at Matthews Funeral Home, Bailieborough Road, Virginia tomorrow from 4 o’clock until 8 o’clock.

Removal to Mary Immaculate Church, Virginia via Main Street, arriving for 3 o’clock Funeral Mass on Sunday with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

His family have asked that donations be made to Virginia Cancer Care Fund in lieu of flowers.

As a mark of respect, O’Donoghue’s Pharmacy, Main Street, Virginia and Gormleys Pharmacy, Ballyjamesduff will be closed on Saturday.
