New Do Not Consume notice issued on local water scheme

The county's latest Do Not Consume notice has been issued for the Mountainlodge Group Water Scheme.

Cavan County Council issued the notice following consultation with the HSE.

It says the message was issued "with immediate effect to protect the health of all consumers of water supplied by the Mountainlodge Group Water Supply Scheme".

Higher than permitted levels of manganese are being blamed for the notice.

People serviced by the network are being told not to consume their water in any circumstances. Boiling your water will not render it safe to drink.

Cavan County Council says bottled water, or alternatively sourced water should be used for:

  • Drinking
  • Preparing Drinks made with water
  • Cooking of Food.
  • Food Preparation including washing and preparation of salads and similar foods, which are not cooked prior to eating
  • Brushing of teeth and/or gargling
  • Making of ice. However, ensure you first discard all existing ice cubes in fridges and freezers and filtered water in fridges

Alternative water supplies will be provided, with details available from Group Water Scheme management. Water from tankers should be boiled before use for drinking or for food preparation.

It follows a Do Not Consume notice which was issued for Cootehill in recent weeks. Thousands were affected by the notice which hit businesses and householders alike.

It has since been lifted.
