Driving arrests over Bank Holiday weekend

Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoints appointed in Cavan and Monaghan.

By Sunday evening last, July 31, close to half a dozen motorists had been detected over August Bank Holiday weekend for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The detections, part of a weekend long road safety campaign, saw Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoints appointed in both counties Cavan and Monaghan.

It began on Friday when members attached to the Cavan Roads Policing Unit stopped a motorist on the N3 that morning.

The driver failed the roadside breath test for alcohol, and later more samples were taken.

Gardaí in Carrickmacross meanwhile on patrol along the N2 detected a motorist driving at 121kmph towing a trailer where legal speed limit while towing a trailer is 80kmph.

On Saturday, Cavan Roads Policing Unit again patrolling the N3 arrested a driver after they failed a roadside drug test.

The driver subsequently tested positive for both cocaine and cannabis.

By Sunday, five drivers had been arrested across counties Cavan and Monaghan for drunk driving, and on Monday the Cavan Roads Policing Unit stopped another driver who failed the roadside breath test for alcohol.

The driver also provided officers with a false name and was arrested and charged to court.

Another driver was stopped by Bailieborough gardaí driving with no insurance, Road Tax expired since last year, and no NCT.

In a post shared on social media, a local garda spokesperson said: "Some drivers continue to put their own lives and the lives of other road users at risk. Please think before you get behind the wheel of the dangers of drink/drug driving and the possible consequence."
