'Super Sunday' as four to fall by the wayside

GAA News

‘Super Sunday’ for local football fans arrives this weekend as all six round 4 Senior Football Championship matches are down for decision at 3pm in venues across the county.

While the championships, across all three grades, have failed to catch light so far, with several of the leading teams suffering significant injury problems, crowds have been excellent. Almost 1,600 tickets were sold for the meeting of Crosserlough and Ramor United, champions in 2020 and 2021 respectively, last Sunday in Crosskeys.

As it stands, the top five in the table – Cavan Gaels, Killygarry, Lacken, Ramor and Crosserlough – look safely through to the knock-out stages. Butlersbridge and Ballinagh are certainly out which leaves Kingscourt, Lavey, Laragh, Gowna and Mullahoran battling it out for the last three spots.

Of those, Laragh have the best score difference but are on only two points and face a tough task against Crosserlough. Gowna and Kingscourt meet in Killinkere with last year’s finalists knowing a win will certainly get them through while the Stars must win and hope other results go their way if they are to scrape into the quarters on three points.

Kingscourt will hope Lavey (who play Mullahoran) and Laragh both lose, in which case a win over Gowna would see the east Cavan side edge it on the head-to-head rule.

Should Lavey, whose draw with Gowna at the weekend remarkably was their 11th stalemate in their last 30 championship matches, beat the Dreadnoughts, they will move to four points which would see them march on to the quarter-finals for the seventh year in succession.

Meanwhile, the Intermediate Championship also comes to the boil with all six matches to be played at 6pm on Saturday evening. At the foot of the table, Drumgoon, Belturbet and Killeshandra each have no points and cannot qualify.

Ballyhaise, Templeport, Cuchulainns and Castlerahan will definitely advance regardless of how they fare on Saturday, which leaves Denn, Shercock, Cootehill, Killinkere, Ballymachugh, Bailieborough and Cornafean in a battle for the remaining spots, with the Reds the worst off on score difference.

There is likely to be just a point or two in it in terms of score difference for eighth position, with the Ballymachugh v Cootehill game a real four-pointer.

Unlike the Senior Championship, where teams who finish from ninth to 12th enter the relegation play-offs, positions nine and 10 in the Intermediate Championship are safe, with the four teams below that playing off to see who goes down to junior ranks.
