Gardaí are asking families and neighbours of elderly people living alone to advise them to “never engage or employ” cold callers. They ask them also to tell them to “never leave strangers unsupervised” at the door or in the house.

“If someone does call in such circumstances report the matter immediately to your local Garda Station. Always ask for identification and take steps to verify it by contacting the company/organisation the caller purports to be from.”

The final piece of advice is to “never keep cash at home”.

The spokesperson added: “Genuine trades people will not be offended by enquiries we make on receiving a report of cold callers.”
