Virginia Civic Centre to be ‘substantially complete’ by year end

Work on €5.3M project nearing completion

Work on the €5.3 million development of the Virginia Civic, Cultural, and Library Services Centre is to be “substantially complete” by year end, according to Cavan County Council.

Funding of €3,963,525 was secured for the project under the Rural Regeneration Development Fund, with the remainder of the finances coming from the council’s own coffers.

Demac Construction Ltd are overseeing construction, which involves the development of a new three-storey building comprising a community library, meeting rooms and events/exhibition areas, which can be used by the library and theatre, along with a tourism information service and a range of other activities.

The former Parochial House, located adjacent to the theatre, will be transformed to provide a box office and office space along with a digital suite with an interactive tourist information system. Upstairs, this building will be converted into a multi-use space.

The existing theatre, meanwhile, is being upgraded and linked to the new box office space and library, through the construction of a shared foyer, which will provide access to the Civic Centre and link the three elements.

A civic space will also open up access to the lakeshore, boating marina, Virginia Show Centre, Virginia College, and the recently redeveloped lakeshore park.

A spokesperson for Cavan County Council stated that work is “ongoing” at present, and provided an update on the current state of development, confirming that the build is soon expected to be “substantially complete”.

“The local authority looks forward to opening this fantastic resource for the people of Virginia and its hinterland in the near future.”
