Ten arrests for driving over the limit for drink or drugs

Road Safety

A total of 10 drivers were detained by local gardai over the bank holiday weekend for either drink driving or drug driving.

Gardaí wryly stated the bank holiday weekend - introduced for St Brigid's Day - "proved to be a busy one" for road safety enforcement.

A total of nine drivers were arrested on suspicion of drink driving and one for drug driving (cocaine) in the Cavan Monaghan Division.

A garda spokesperson outlined on their Facebook page: "The circumstances of detection varied from checkpoint detection, initial speed detection, erratic driving and attendance by our members at traffic collisions."

"Thankfully none of the accidents resulted in any serious injury. A number of the drivers involved are learner permit holders.

"We continue to appeal to roadusers not to drive under the influence of drink or drugs but there are still a minority who risk their lives and the lives of other roadusers."
