St Pat’s College set for a slick musical

‘Grease is the word’ on everyone’s lips, as St Patrick’s College students take to the stage in this iconic musical next week.

They are joined by students from the Royal School, Loreto College and Breifne College in creating the world of Rydell High School, 1959. Funny yet heart-wrenching at times, Grease follows the journey of Danny and the Burger Palace Boys alongside Sandy and the Pink Ladies, as they navigate high school to the unforgettable rock n’ roll soundtrack that defined generations.

Hot-rodding gangster Danny Zuko and the sweet new girl in town, Sandy Dumbrowski had a secret romance in summer, but now back in the context of school, peer-pressure and cliques make their love a bit more complicated.

St Patrick’s College have a strong tradition of embracing the Arts and Music. Their stage curtain has been closed since 2019, due to the impact of Covid, with the Green Room remaining silent while props and costumes gathered dust. Yet now, they are delighted to return with their production of this all-time classic.

Following an intense auditioning process in September and October 2022, stage directors Gwen Brady and Niall Monahan have been working tirelessly with a cast of over 50 students on their acting and dance.

Musical director Ciaran Tackney guides a very talented orchestra and pit chorus, comprised of a further 40 students, through the thrilling soundtrack, featuring such hit songs as ‘Greased Lightnin’, ‘Hopelessly Devoted to You’, and ‘You’re The One That I Want’.

The stage setting of this eventual ‘student-run musical’ is created by the talented Dawn McKeon and David Macken, while Bronte Fitzmaurice, another member of the initial production team, is responsible for such elements as promotion, backstage and front of house co-ordination each night.

Filled with the trials and tribulations of teenage love, lust, and heartbreak - Grease is a definitive high school musical. Tickets, only €12, are selling fast and are available from the St Pat’s school office, Maxol, Cullies and Multisound. A show for all the family, not to be missed, spread the word…
