Half a dozen break-ins in April

Local gardaí are investigating a burglary at a house near Cavan Town.

The break-in took place in the Maple Avenue area of The Gallops on Friday, April 28, between the hours of 9am and 7pm. A number of items reported taken include a new Playstation 5, Huawei tablets and a quantity of jewellery.

The items of jewellery include a gold, three-ruby stone ring.

Gardaí are now urging people to be vigilant about being asked to buy such items, or that if they suspect them of being stolen or have any information to contact them at Cavan Garda Station on 049-4368800 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána confirmed they are investigating the incident and said “no arrests” have been made at this time, but “enquiries are ongoing”.

It follows a similar type of theft days earlier in the Tullynacrunat area of Corrinshigagh, Co Monaghan, on Tuesday, April 25, between 9am and 11am.

Three rings were among several items of jewellery taken. They include an 18-carat, three-stone diamond engagement ring; an 18-carat, five-stone eternity ring; and a gold and platinum wedding ring with unique engraving on the inside of the band.

On the same day, three males were disturbed and took to the fields to escape after they were caught in the process of breaking into a property at Knockboy, Silverstream.

A dark coloured Audi A3 was spotted in the area, which gardaí believe may have been used by the gang.

The Cavan and Monaghan break-ins last week are among half a dozen currently being investigated in the division to have occurred only last month.

There were two more break-ins reported- in the townlands of Aghalissabeagh and Tirnaskea North, near Scotstown - on Thursday, April 20.

During the Aghalissabeagh burglary, between the hours of 1-2.30pm, a sum of cash was taken. The other at Tirnaskea North occurred between the hours of 11am and 3:15pm.

Earlier in the month, April 14, gardaí were called to investigate break-ins at two homes - at Drumgoole, Silverstream (4:30-5:30pm) and Latlurcan (1-6pm) - again with cash taken.

It follows a number of incidents that resulted in arrests and persons being brought before the courts.

On Saturday, April 1, gardaí in Castleblayney received a report from PSNI colleagues of a car acting suspiciously that had crossed the border. With assistance of units from Carrickmacross, Monaghan, Ardee and the Armed Support Unit, four males were arrested. They later were charged and appeared before court.

In Cavan, April 5, Gardaí were alerted to an intruder at a building site. On arrival a male, late 20s, was observed attempting to gain entry and he was arrested following a short chase on foot.
