Kiernan misses out on World Cup squad

This will be Ireland's first ever appearance at a Women's World Cup.

Bailieborough’s Leanne Kiernan has missed out on a spot in Republic of Ireland manager Vera Pauw’s 23-player World Cup squad.

The Bailieborough native had missed most of the season with Liverpool due to a ankle injury suffered an ankle injury she picked up on the opening day 2–1 win over Chelsea, which required surgery and ruled her out for several months.

She made two appearances all year, but managed to recover to play the first half of last Thursday's 3-1 win against Zambia, showing flashes of her capability and quality.

Kiernan though isn’t the only surprise name left out of the squad.

Aoife Mannion, Megan Campbell and have also missed out on the trip to Australia.

Mannion injured her knee ligaments in Manchester United training a month ago, while Kiernan’s Liverpool teammate Campbell has had little game time in the last couple of months.

There is still hope through, with Pauw set confirm her three back-up players later this morning.

This will be Ireland's first ever appearance at a Women's World Cup.

They will fly out to Brisbane next week following a farewell friendly against France at Tallaght Stadium on Thursday, July 6.
